Paralegal Technology, A.A.S. Program
Graduates of our Paralegal Technology Associate in Applied Science degree program are finding rewarding job opportunities and career advancement in a competitive marketplace. If you are looking to begin a legal career or begin working toward an advanced degree, this is a great starting place.
A paralegal/legal assistant may not practice law, give legal advice,
or represent clients in a court of law.
What You’ll Learn
Our curriculum will give you all the basics and build a firm foundation. The application-based assignments will teach you how to use all that you’re learning, and along the way you will develop an impressive portfolio of work to present in job interviews. As you earn this degree you will learn:
- about the role paralegals play in our legal system
- basic concepts about business, civil, criminal, domestic, and civil injuries law
- how the court system and litigation process works
- foundations for legal research
- how to properly cite legal authorities
- legal ethics
- about the NC Rules of Professional Conduct
- how to assist an attorney in preparing and filing legal documents

Our Work-Based Learning Resource: Your Pass to Exclusive Job Opportunities
Gaston College students have an incredible resource through our Work-Based Learning and Placement Office called College Central Network. This program lets alumni and potential employers post job positions and search the resumes of participating students. As a student or alumni of Gaston College, you have access to over half a million national job postings. Some of these positions are listed only through our portal.
This program is recognized as a North Carolina Qualified Paralegal Studies Program by the NC State Bar Board of Paralegal Certification. This designation qualifies graduates of the Paralegal degree program to sit for the North Carolina Certified Paralegal (NCCP) exam, provided they have completed at least nine semester hours of legal education, or the equivalent, with classroom instruction (live, real-time, simultaneous broadcast via satellite or webinar). Students should be aware of this requirement when scheduling classes.
