Purpose of the Course

Successful completion of the Broker Pre-licensing Course is generally required to qualify for the North Carolina (NC) real estate license examination and to obtain a NC real estate broker license. The primary objectives of this course are (1) to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to act as licensed real estate brokers in North Carolina in a manner that protects and serves the public interest and (2) to prepare students for the NC real estate license examination. This course may only be offered by education providers certified by the NC Real Estate Commission. At Gaston College, the Broker Pre-licensing Course consists of a total of 81 instructional hours, including the end-of-course examination.

After passing the Pre-licensing course, a student must submit a license application to the NC Real Estate Commission to be eligible to take the license examination. License application instructions are provided in the free publication Real Estate Licensing in North Carolina (RELINC) which is available on the Commission’s website at www.ncrec.gov. The minimum age requirement to obtain a real estate license in North Carolina is 18. It is recommended that you review the RELINC publication prior to registering and paying for this class. Course Description

There are 34 modules in this course, including the end of course exam.  This self-paced course is designed to deny access to each module until the student achieves a score of 75% on the quiz in the preceding module.  Students can work at their own pace on the assignments without having to log on at specific times. The course employs NCREC certified instructors who will be checking in with students periodically. The end of course exam will be proctored online by the instructor.

Major topics addressed in the Broker Pre-licensing Course include basic real estate concepts and law, property taxation, land use controls, environmental hazards, brokerage relationships and practices, real estate contracts, real estate financing, closing a real estate sale transaction, real property valuation, property insurance basics, fair housing laws, landlord and tenant, property management, federal income taxation of real estate, basic construction, basic real estate investment, North Carolina Real Estate License Law and Commission Rules, and Trust Account Guidelines. Real estate mathematics is an important component of this course and calculations will be required.

Course Requirements

Required Hardware and Software

  • Students must use a desktop or laptop computer (preferably) or tablet to access the course. Students are discouraged from using a phone to access the course.
  • Student’s device must have an internet connection, internet browser and speakers. Students are encouraged to use the fastest internet available to them and use the most recent version of an internet browser. Recommended browsers are Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, we do not recommend Safari or Edge.
  • For the end-of-course exam, students will be required to have a web camera, microphone, and speaker attached to their computer.

Eligibility Requirements for Course Completion Certificate

To successfully complete the Broker Pre-licensing Course and receive a course completion certificate, a student must:

  1. submit student modules before the class end of course exam
  2. pass the end-of-course exam with a minimum score of 75%

Pre-Requisites

  • Students must be at least 18 years of age
  • Reside legally in the United States
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be able to speak, read, and write the English language

Registration Options

PLEASE NOTE: Payment for continuing education classes is expected at the time of registration, as the classes are on a first-come, first-served basis. All costs must be paid for a student to be officially registered. You cannot DROP/WITHDRAW from classes using Self-Service.

Refund Policy

If a student officially drops from a class or classes before the 10 percent date of the class(es), a 75 percent tuition refund will be given for the class(es) dropped. A 100% refund will be made if the student drops from the class prior to the class start date. No refunds will be given after the 10 percent date. If a course fails to materialize, refunds are automatically processed. (The refund policy is subject to change. Refunds of tuition will be issued in accordance with the current state and college policy.)
